Songs by Mar Malade feel like a vacation set to music. What began as a small everyday escape shared by two friends has grown into a vibrant project: Mar Malade – consisting of Alexander Hauer and Michèl M. Almeida – have since released three albums “full of summer” and carried their songs (including “Mexico,” “Cabriolet" and “Jungle”) to audiences across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
On stage, Mar Malade and their multi-instrumentalist live band present music that is at times energetic, at times buoyant, at times nostalgic – always performed with an irrepressible joy reminiscent of the carefree abandon usually only a grandmother would indulge (and after all, she’s the one who makes the sticky-sweet jam).
Beyond the songs themselves, the duo creates delightfully curious moments between the music: the drummer reads aloud from the local newspaper and shares horoscopes for all Capricorns in the audience; Alexander leads the crowd in singing the classic hiking tune “Hejo, spann den Wagen an”; and Michèl wanders across the stage as “Sportsman,” performing pantomime in a style reminiscent of Helge Schneider.
Each Mar Malade concert becomes its own warmly wrapped space – filled with music, joy, and shared moments created for and together with their audience.
