Joya Mooi is a singer-songwriter who delights in crafting melodies for the courageous souls unafraid of vulnerability and introspection. Drawing from her South African roots and the characteristic vibes of her native Amsterdam, Mooi brings forth an innovative blend of R&B infused with indie and pop influences.
Since the end of the pandemic, Joya Mooi has embraced more frequent live performances with her band. Fuelling a heightened passion to craft groove-driven tracks that embody escapism, with hints of disco. Her new EP ‘Open Hearts’, released in August 2024, marks the debut of this fresh sonic direction. Collaborating, amongst others, with South African producer duo Easy Freak and writer/producer Bastian Langebæk (who worked with names like Olivia Dean, Nilufer Yanya, Jessie Ware, Jack Garratt, Zara Larsson and Rita Ora), Mooi delivers a captivating fusion of her signature style with vibrant new elements.
At the heart of the six-track project is the theme of identity, with Joya Mooi taking listeners on a journey of self-discovery as she pays tribute to a number of historical figures and events along the way. It serves as a continuation of her purposeful approach to music, having released double album ‘What's Around The Corner’ in January 2023 which explored themes of spirituality, cycles and social consciousness. The album has received over 5 million streams to date and international recognition for its thought-provoking subject matter.
